London: International rights group Amnesty announced on Tuesday, it had presented its highest honor to Pakistani schoolgirl and education right supporter Malala Yousafzai, the teen activist shot in the head by the Taliban for campaigning for girl’s education, last year.
Malala will share Amnesty’s ambassador of conscience award 2013 with American singer and human rights activist Harry Belafonte, the London- based NGO revealed.
The award will be presented to Malala and Harry, who have promoted and enhanced the cause of human rights through their life and by example, at a ceremony in Dublin, Ireland by Irish rock singer Bono, on Tuesday evening.
The 16 years old girl said she was truly honored to receive the award.
“Our two new Ambassadors of conscience are different in their skills in many ways, but they share a dedication to the fight for human rights everywhere and for all,” said secretary General of Amnesty International- Salil Shetty.
Malala was shot in the head on a bus by the Taliban last October, an attack that drew worldwide attention.
She was flown to Britain for surgery of head injuries and returned to school in March, Birmingham.
“Harry and Malala are truly Ambassadors of conscience, speaking for justice, universal rights and human dignity and inspiring others to follow their example.”
Malala Yousafzai said:
“I would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that there are many children like me across the world who fight every single day for their rights to go to school.”
I hope that we will realize one day by working together, about our dream of education for every child in every corner of the world.
Belafonte- Emmy award winner, paid tribute to his co-winner.
“I am really honored to receive the Ambassador of conscience award because I am having the difference of sharing this with Malala Yousafzai, a true hero of our time. My admiration for her is ever lasting. She has awakened many in the global family to a commitment in tussle against tyranny. For all this I will remain forever thankful.” said Belafonte.
